The Consumer Code for New Homes (CCNH) celebrated its formal approval by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) Consumer Code Approval Scheme at Westminster this week. CCNH is the only CTSI Approved Code in the new build sector which is backed by an industry collective of warranty bodies.

 

The launch was attended by high profile speakers including:

Maria Miller MP 

Paul Nash, Past President of The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

Barbara Hughes from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute 

Andrew Saunders-Davies from Berkeley Group

and one of the Code founders, Clare Thomas of Q Assure Build Ltd

 

along with representatives from the house building industry including the HomeOwners Alliance.

 

Leon Livermore, Chief Executive at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute said "There's no doubt that buying a new home is one of the most challenging purchases you can make, with unexpected difficulties along the way. The Consumer Code for New Homes has been established to be of maximum benefit to consumers and to ensure best practise in the marketing, selling and purchasing of new homes.

 

It aims to provide a genuine commitment to improving standards of construction and raising customer service standards in the new build homes market, recognising that part of that commitment is providing consumers with a voice (and a clear complaints process) when things simply don’t go according to plan when they buy a new home from a developer.

The Consumer Code for New Homes has been established to be of maximum benefit to consumers and its aim is to provide a genuine commitment to improving standards of construction and raising customer service standards in the new build homes market, recognising that part of that commitment is providing consumers with a voice (and a clear complaints process) when things simply don’t go according to plan when they buy a new home from a developer.

 

This underlying principle is echoed in the approach of the Code Users of the Consumer Code for New Homes (the Warranty Bodies who are signed up with us), whose site surveying activities help to improve the quality of construction in house-building. And through this quality focused approach, CCNH demonstrates a real desire to have a truly industry-led Consumer Code which can be of maximum impact in the new build homes market and can respond to real practices and trends in the industry.

 

The Code was approved by the Chartered Training Standards Institute earlier this year as part of their Approved Codes scheme, which CTSI took over from the OFT in 2013. Code approval is a rigorous two-stage process which took CCNH around 12 months to achieve. This external approval adds real consumer-focused oversight of the Code and ultimately demonstrates to consumers that our registered developers work to our expected standards.

 

The Consumer Code for New Homes is supported by a number of warranty bodies (our Code Users): Q Assure Build Ltd, Protek Warranty, Global Home Warranties, FMB Insurance (part of the Federation of Master Builders) and BLP Insurance (Building LifePlans Ltd).
